Lyman - Engineering Graduate

Name: Lyman

Degree: Engineering

I joined the Australian Submarine Agency through the 2023 Defence Graduate Program while it was still operating as a taskforce.

During my first rotation, I was embedded in Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), where I contributed to the development of novel submarine steels. My project focus was tailored to the research and experimental aspects. It was incredibly rewarding to tackle complex challenges and make meaningful contributions to such a significant long-term research initiative.

While placed within DTSG, I had the opportunity to tour BlueScope’s steelworks factory at Port Kembla and observe explosive bulge testing used to validate steel quality.

This experience broadened my perspective on the shipbuilding industry in Australia and my understanding of the materials and processes involved.

For my second rotation, I completed a four-month secondment at the Australian Nuclear Science Technology Organisation (ANSTO) Campus in Lucas Heights, NSW. During this time, I learned about the effects of radiation on materials, conducted small-scale mechanical testing, and developed my data analysis skills. In addition to these hands on experiences, I toured several ANSTO facilities, including the Materials Fabrication Bay, The Centre for Accelerator Science, and the OPAL reactor. This experience gave me deeper insights into the advanced research being conducted.

Overall, the Nuclear Graduate Program has offered numerous opportunities for exciting experiences and personal development.

Throughout the program, I attended various training sessions that have prepared me for my future career in submarine development.

It has been inspiring to witness the creation of a new agency and observe how the nation plans to tackle the immense challenge of building a nuclear workforce.
